TASTE
Is there a better, more inviting smell than a bakery? According to the Daily Mail in the U.K., there isn’t. In the online magazine’s 2015 poll, freshly baked bread “won by a nose” in the top 50 favorite scents, followed by bacon, newly mown grass and coffee.
At B’s Bake Shoppe in Canby, you’ll find two of those enticing aromas to fully enjoy and savor while visiting the cozy, open-kitchen bakery. The smells are just the start. One bite of anything on the artisan menu. and the taste experience will have you returning time and again.
Customer appreciation is nothing new for owners Bethany and David Zito. The former pastry chef of The Painted Lady in Newberg — Oregon’s only Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond dining experience — Bethany continues her mastery-level of skills in the kitchen alongside her chef husband. Together they’ve made a special place.
In fact, B’s Bake Shoppe remains the only bakery between Portland and Salem that bakes artisan bread, baguettes and sourdough fresh daily with rotating flavors. They also just started offering espresso made from the same beans as their already popular coffee via Bespoken Coffee Roasters in Corvallis. Again, the smells are top-level.
If you’re a creature of habit and enjoy bread, no doubt this place will be habit-forming. You’ve been warned. On Wednesdays, seek out the Calabrian chili-oregano sourdough, focaccia and scali, an Italian-style bread from Boston. Thursdays, customers can order pumpernickel, sandwich bread and stuffed bread. Fridays, taste black olive-rosemary sourdough, focaccia and scali. Saturdays, devour the apple-cheddar-walnut sourdough as well as sandwich bread and stuffed bread. And Sundays, find chive-tomato semolina sourdough, focaccia, scali and more on the menu.
In addition to bread, the pastry case also delights. Get your nose and palate ready for breakfast croissants, crumb buns, sticky buns and buttermilk biscuits — Bethany’s favorite is the honey-rosemary version. Desserts include macarons, gourmet candy bars, cheesecakes, seasonal fruit galettes, housemade ice cream by the pint and, of course, cookies. Customers rave about the unusual but oh-so addictive smoked white chocolate and chocolate chunk cookie.
Can you imagine the smell of THOSE baking? You don’t have to dream it. Just head to B’s Bake Shoppe in downtown Canby for the ultimate sensory experience.
