Slice of Summer HP JUNE23.jpg

Summer fun in Canby is returning for 2023 thanks to the Canby Livability Coalition. The popular and fan-favorite Slice of Summer concert series will return once again to Wait Park for concerts from 6 to 8 PM on four Sunday evenings in July and August. This year will be bigger and better than ever, with the season offering four concerts—two in July and two in August.

Kicking off the season on July 10th will be the Jesse James Band. This rocking country music party band is led by Hubbard natives and brothers James Curtis and Jesse Slover, who have been playing together for 40 years.

The second show, scheduled for July 24th, will feature the PNW’s Thrillride, back for a third time at the festival. Thrillride plays an incredible hybrid of upbeat rock, funk, and country.

Then on August 7th, Portland’s Stump City Soul will step up to entertain the community with their soul funk dance music featuring an impressive brass section.

And to close out the season two weeks later on August 21st, Portland’s Generator will wrap it all up with the fourth and final concert, playing a variety of rock, soul, R&B, motown, blues, and boogie.

Canby fans will remember that Slice of Summer was one of the first live music events in Oregon to announce a comeback in 2021, so continuing to move forward in 2023 is even more exciting!

A Canby tradition since 1985, the Slice of Summer series was canceled in 2017 when the Canby Music Boosters (who previously organized the concerts) could no longer run the event. Fortunately, the community wanted Slice of Summer back after going one year without, and a new volunteer group, led by Lisa Leir, revived the series under the direction of the Canby nonprofit Livability Coalition.

A key to making these festivities possible is the support and participation by the incredible and vital volunteers who join every year and donate their energy, time, and talent to make these events successful for everyone. This year, volunteers are needed more than ever to complete essential tasks, such as setting up and tearing down the stage, selling water and raffle tickets, and keeping the bathrooms and grounds clean. If interested in volunteering, please contact Lisa Leir via Facebook or on the Slice of Summer website.

So don’t forget…you, too, can help, by contributing in whatever way you can; whether through donations, attendance, or your time, and help keep Slice of Summer moving forward and providing these wonderful events for the community.
